With so many dogs in shelters waiting for a good home, it’s important to raise awareness of their situation and encourage people to adopt. In honor of this cause, October has been designated Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month. There are a number of ways that you can do your part to help by spreading the word about adopting dogs from animal shelters.
Use Social Media
Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites give you a chance to reach a lot of people by posting about shelter dogs who needs homes. You can post a simple reminder that October if Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, or write a longer post about the benefits of adopting dogs from shelters. You can also share posts from your local animal shelter to let others know about dogs who are waiting to be adopted.
Volunteer at Your Local Shelter
Get in touch with your local animal shelter to see if they need help with upcoming adoption events. You can also help out by walking dogs that are available for adoption or even offering to foster a dog in your home. Make sure you let family and friends know about your experiences volunteering, so they’ll be encouraged to help out too.
Make a Donation
If you don’t have time to volunteer or if you’re not active on social media, you can help out by making a donation to your local animal shelter or a rescue group in your area. You can make a monetary donation that provides shelters with funding for supplies and other expenses, or ask if they need food, beds, blankets, toys or other dog supplies.
Talk to people you know about the advantages of adopting a dog from a shelter rather than purchasing one, such as reducing pet overpopulation and providing an animal in need with a loving home. You can also write a letter to the editor for your local newspaper to help educate your community about the importance of pet adoption.
When you help support Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, you’re giving these dogs a better chance at ending up in a great home with people who will take good care of them. Encourage friends and family members to pitch in and offer their support for this important cause as well.
